New Phishing Text Message Scam Alert
KCU has been alerted of a new phishing text message (SMS) scam currently circulating and targeting credit union members.
What the scam looks like
Members are receiving a text message claiming that:
- Their credit union account has been placed on hold, and
- They must “review their account” using a link included in the message.
The message contains a fraudulent link (as shown in attached image) and a Reference: 389210 (or a similar fake reference number)
Key Risks
This is a phishing attempt designed to:
- Steal online account login details
- Capture personal information
- Harvest debit card or banking information
- Potentially take over accounts or commit fraud
Important to Note
- The domain names used often appear similar to legitimate Irish credit union sites, but are designed to deceive.
- The messages may appear to come from the same message thread as genuine credit union texts due to SMS spoofing.
Kildare Credit Union will never text you about sensitive information. We will always endeavour to call our members should the need arise.
